Goods and Services Tax (GST) to be imposed on more than 60 food items.

UPDATE – 19 June: GST on more than 60 food items is cancelled!

Official Statement regarding Goods and Services Tax on more than 60 food items (Amendment No.2 Order 2017) has been published on Jabatan Kastam Diraja Malaysia.:

Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be imposed on more than 60 types of food items starting July 1, 2017.

The items that will be levied with GST include certain vegetables, fruits, coffee, tea, spices, noodles and a few items not consumed by the mass like eel and swordfish, China Press reported yesterday.

 

All these items would be taken off the GST zero-rated list:

  • Seafood
    – (1) eel (2) swordfish
  • Vegetables (Cooked/Frozen/Preserved)
    – potatoes, beans, peas, spinach, sweet corn & other vegetables
    – Mushrooms, Olive, Capsicums
  • Fruits
    Imported fruits like avocados, dates, figs, grapes (fresh/dried), nectarines, cherries and berries.
  • Tea/Coffee
  • Spices
    – Saffron, Thyme, Bay Leaf,
  • Oil
    – (1) Coconut Oil (2) Nuts Oil
    • Noodles
      bihun, kuey teow, laksa mee
